Dr. ir. Martijn Nawijn from our group (and his team) won the NRS Crossover Science Award 2020 for his work on the Lung Cell Atlas. It describes the healthy human lungs, and the disease-associated changes in the cellular landscape of the airway wall in patients with childhood-onset asthma. The combination of innovative single-cell analyses with newly developed computational approaches resulted in the identification of unique cell states in the airway wall that had not been identified previously. The award (€10.000) will be used to establish an animation for the use in presentations, on websites and on social media. This animation serves to inform the respiratory and patient community and the lay public on the Lung Cell Atlas initiative and to ask for feedback on the design of the atlas.
